God has ordained the churchs primary leadership to reside with male elders who meet the qualifications prescribed by Scripture (1 Timothy 3:1-7). The question I shall attempt to deal with this morning pertains to the role of women in the church, our church in particular. In his letter to Titus (2:3-5) Paul also gives advice as to the role older women can play. In each case the women showed a remarkable faith which Jesus rewarded and, in one case, acknowledged publicly. Paul's practice of ordaining elders in local congregations (Acts 14:21-23) was limited to men as he makes clear to Timothy and Titus (1 Timothy 3:1-2; Titus 1:5-6). Two basic principles There are two principles concerning the role of women in the new testament church. What does the Word of God say to us in this matter of women and their function in the church? The creation account does not read, in the image of God he created him. Instead it is, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them (Genesis 1:27). But this does not do away with the fact that God has ordained the home as the primary sphere of the woman. (False) Both men and women in the church can use their talents for the glory of God. Turning to the Hebrew Scriptures for a moment, not a small number of women are praised throughout the Tanakh. Women and men are ontologically equal in the eyes of God. The foundation truth behind the role of women in the church, then, is that Jesus Christ is the head of the church. 25 Cited from a review of Man as Male and Female, by Patricia Gundry, Moody Month, October, 1975, p. 36. To aid in their nurturing role, women are also more emotional than men. Because of this, man must lead in the assemblies of the church and of the home. But Jesus did call women, and he called them into significant ministry. In Acts chapter nine we are told of Dorcas, who worked with the widows making garments, I would assume for use either by the needy or by those who ministered in the church. Did Paul view these women as more corrupted by sin than their male counterparts? In the life of the early church, according to the Acts of the Apostles and the various epistles of the New Testament, women continued to occupy an important place in the life of the church and in the work of evangelism. First, a married woman can find fulfillment in the church by doing what she was designed to do. He was glad, too, of the insight some women had into His person and the attention that they gave Him on the basis of that insight, for example, the woman who washed His feet with her tears and then anointed Him (Matthew 26:7f. 7 For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. It is not a matter of if we are going to err; we will err. Kimberly Lattimore, a congregant for 33 years, said she "supports Saddleback 100 per cent,'' but is eager to hear Andy Wood's reasoning in favour of women pastors and do her own research. No one, save the rankest liberal, would disagree with the fact that it was the practice of the Apostle Paul that women could not take a leadership role in the church meeting. Womans subordinate role no more keeps her from participating in ruling the creation than our Lords subordination to the Father restricts Him from rule. It would seem that He enjoyed their society, as can be seen from His visits to the Bethany home of Martha, Mary and Lazarus. They were the last to leave our Lords cross and the first to see Him resurrected (Luke 23:55; 24:1ff.). Faith: Romans 10:17 - "So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God ." 2. Is it possible that Paul was referring primarily to a few specific women from Ephesus in his letters to Timothy? Lest we should become puffed up because we take the Scriptures seriously and literally, let me also say that there has been a great deal of injustice done by Christian men whose egos are slightly over-enlarged and who have used the teachings of Paul to domineer and dictate their wives. I would understand that women are not to speak in the church meeting whenever in so doing they have the floor. Surely we would not forbid women from participating in congregational singing. Source: The Monthly Record, 1993. She writes, speaks, and teaches with a passion to encourage women with Biblical truths. So far as we know He did not invite women to the Lords Supper in Matthew 26:20. "Every person will give account of himself to God." (Romans 14:12) The husband is not called to pontificate anything within the family. Understand the meanin They are like pastors, only they have more authority than pastors. One could almost be amused at the ingenious methods which men and women have employed to do away with Pauls teaching on the role of women in the church. Mistreatments of women such as forbidding education, sexual abuse, or denying civil rights are violations of the image-of-God principle. While Scripture maintains that women and men are equal in nature and gifting, the Bible does delineate particular roles for each gender, especially concerning the church. Women are great at serving others and volunteering at a church where we are needed, and this is an exceptional way we can fill our role in ministry. It is obvious that this woman is given a great deal of latitude and responsibility by her husband, but it is also clear that the central base of operations is the home. It may be an unromantic and undramatic role, but it is vital in the formation of Christian character and in the providing of successive generations of men and women to the Christian church. Paul says Rufus mother was like a mother to him (Romans 16:13). What has really taken center stage are not Pauls words themselves, but rather a position being articulated by some that comes from a singular interpretation of one particular passage. And if they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church (1 Cor. I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. Women supported the Apostles in many areas and were great helpers in the church (Act 2:17; 18:24; 21:8). They called the course American History from a British Point of View. That is somewhat the way I feel this morning as I approach the subject of the role of women in the church, from a mans point of view. It's wonderful that you're asking questions and learning more about Scripture so you can grow in Him. Were the roles of pastor and preacher in the first century the same as we understand them today? The truth is, there are literally hundreds of other Scriptures that speak into the discussion on the roles of women in the church and its leadership. Woman was created from the man and for him, while he was created directly from the dust of the earth as the crowning glory of God's creative work (1 Corinthians 11:8-10). It is also, perhaps, the most demanding service the world knows frequently a monotonous service; certainly a hard grind; often, sadly, an unacknowledged service; and one without holidays or regular nine-to-five hours; one performed in sickness and in health. Men and women stand as equals before God. We just read the portion of Scripture from Titus 2:4-5 where the older women are to teach the younger women to be good wives and mothers, and housekeepers. Matt. Now I know that some wives are better mechanics than their husbands, and that some husbands are better cooks than their wives. When the church, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, sent out its first missionaries, it was two men, Paul and Barnabas, who were sent (Acts 13:2). All authority in the church and home, on the other hand, is to be exercised in Christian love, in self-denying and self-giving service following Christ's own example (1 Peter 5:1-3; Ephesians 5:25-29).There is to be no taint of tyranny in it nor any idea of slavery, abuse or exploitation. Are we quite sure that all of these women Paul mentioned were completely restricted from preaching and teaching men and seen by him as disqualified as such by the created order? From the beginning, and throughout the history of the church, some Christian women have been engaging in dangerous and . However, there was no woman among the twelve apostles a significant omission. Adam, of course, was guilty just as much for following her lead in siding with her, but he, apparently, was not deceived but sinned with open eyes (1 Timothy 2:14; compare Genesis 3). So much has been said in the past about what a woman cannot do that I have not spent a great deal of time reiterating those things. Both the Son and the Father are equally God. This subjection is to be gladly undertaken for the Lord's sake and in reverence for God's created order. Prophecy is listed as an even higher and authoritative gift than teaching or interpretation on two occasions by Paul (Romans 12:6-7, 1 Corinthians 12:7-10). Women, though often seen as weaker socially in many parts of the first century world, are equally co-heirs to Christs promises with men (John 1:12-13, Romans 8:17, 1 Peter 3:7, Revelation 21:7). This is precisely what Paul said in Ephesians: "For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of . I have to say that as I approach this subject I feel something like a professor that I heard about some time ago. How much did the temple and worship of the goddess Artemis in Ephesus, and the accompanying elevation of feminine over masculine, play into Pauls lone reference to the order of creation of human beings without mentioning that man also came from woman (. In studying this matter it may, perhaps, be as well to begin by looking at the place of women in the Old Testament church, bearing in mind the continuity between the Old Testament and the New Testament: the church is one in both dispensations, though with different outward forms in each (Romans 4:1-6; 11:1-24). It is no surprise that women were active in the early church. When the great commission was given in Matthew 28:16-20, it was given to men. Jesus was not limited by the social conventions of His time and often took issue with the religious leaders of the Jews when social convention and accepted religious practice contradicted true religion and morality and, in the matter of the Samaritan woman and others, He didn't consider Himself bound by social convention. . Man's position as head of the woman is based on his having been created first. The woman is the recipient, the matrix and fashioner of life. But times have changed, and the woman entered the labor market, but did not give up its past role. 2:8-11). It is a sad thing when young girls are raised in Christian homes which teach them to disdain the womanly arts of food preparation, sewing, and rearing children. 6 For if a woman does not cover her head, let her also have her hair cut off; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her cover her head. The role of women in church is seen to be different today than it was in traditional times. No wonder it is assumed in the New Testament that elders are married. Pauls teaching on the marriage relationship greatly enhanced the position of the married woman (cf. God gave the man the responsibility to be the head of the family in providing provision and leadership. So, too, are attitudes that ignore meaningful differences between the sexes or erase gender roles. The idea of mutual submission between husband and wife (Ephesians 5:21) is not only that of wife to husband, but of husband to wife in sacrificial love, as Christ loves the Church (Ephesians 5:25-27). ); and Mary and her attentiveness to His teaching (Luke 10:38f.). That principle is that God has assigned man the responsibility of reflecting or demonstrating the headship of Jesus Christ in marriage and in the church. We will begin our study by observing the cultural backdrop of the view of women in New Testament times; then, we will take note of the practice of both our Lord and Paul in the matter of women, and then we will expound the principle upon which these practices were based, and finally to some practical outworkings of this principle for us today. To minds influenced by the ideas of the Women's Liberation Movement this may seem a "bitter pill" for women to swallow. When Paul mentioned full submission, did he mean to say that all women are to submit to the male leadership in a church, or was he referring to wives submitting to their own husbands as they do to the Lord (Ephesians/Colossians)? In Ephesians 5:21-33; 1 Corinthians 11:3-16 and 1 Timothy 2:8-15, Paul argues, on the basis of this creation order, that husbands should exercise loving, Christlike headships in marriage and should fill the authoritative roles in the church. One aspect of this is staying out of his wayallowing him to assume leadership in the home and in the church. 5 But every woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying, disgraces her head; for she is one and the same with her whose head is shaved. 2. 1:5; 3:15; cf. Verrall, the great classical scholar, once said that one of the chief diseases of which ancient civilization died was a low view of women.27 The Jews had a low view of women. Therefore, as regards the exercise of leadership in the Christian church, Scripture clearly teaches that women are excluded from this responsibility. Perhaps the case of Timothy, already mentioned, springs most easily to mind. The principle is that all things are to be done "decently and in order." People were speaking in tongues without interpretation, they were prophesying without waiting for one another, and the church was in disarray administratively. Four womenRahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Maryare singled out in the genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:1-16). The barriers of gender have been broken down in Christ. In 1 Timothy 5:3-16 Paul addresses the situation of widows in the church and gives important instruction and guidelines to discern whether widows were godly women or not. The elder is to be the "husband [Greek, aner, a male as opposed to a woman (Arndt and Gingrich, 65)] of one wife" (Titus 1:6; 1 Timothy 3:2). In brief, women did minister to our Lord and with our Lord, but never in a capacity of leadership or of authority such as teaching or preaching. And in Philippi, Euodia and Syntyche were not only co-laborers but also contended at Pauls side in the cause of the gospel along with other leaders like Clement (Philippians 4:2-3). It certainly should not be looked down on. With the possible exception of Mary Magdalene, they proved more ready than the male disciples to believe that He had risen from the dead, (Matthew 28:1-8; Luke 24:1-11; John 20:11-18). How dangerous must have appeared such teaching to men of Paul's day outside the Christian church! Phil. 14:12-15; Ezek. Such is the case within the Trinity; how could we expect otherwise in marriage and in the church? Allowing women to hold those positions contradicts the biblical command. This is so in the case of the seven "deacons" of Acts 6:3. 21 Wayne A. Meeks, The Writings of St. Paul: A Critical Edition (New York: Norton, 1972), p. 38. Isaiah 3:12 indicates that God allowed women to rule as part of His judgment on the sinning nation. The gospel is a woman's first and most important discipline, for it is the source of godliness. . In this sermon, Rev. Then there were the women who were Jesus followers from Galilee (Luke 23:49), and Mary Magdalene who was not only the first person to see the resurrected Christ but also the first person, man or woman, to be commissioned directly by the resurrected Christ to declare his resurrection to the other disciples (John 20:14-18). Pastors must have the same qualifications in everyrespect. However, Paul also laid down character qualifications for the widows of 1 Timothy 5 and for the older women of Titus 2 who certainly held no office, so, perhaps such laying down of qualifications has no special significance in the case of verse 4. This equality is bolstered through the Holy Spirits liberal and impartial distribution of spiritual gifts to His children. The role of a woman in the family Bible is to represent the feminine aspect of God's love, mercy and grace in the context of marriage, motherhood and other family relationships. Perhaps we can dig into the Scriptures joyfully, and with thankfulness for the ways the Holy Spirit equips and uses both women and men in the work of the gospel ministry. This is the sphere which God has appointed for the woman. With this we must disagree, for Paul does not base his instructions on culture, but upon principles which are related to the purpose of the church and to the teachings of the Old Testament.
